June 2012 Relief Society Presidency Message

Dear Sisters,

While reading “Daughters in My Kingdom” I came across this inspiring quote by President George Albert Smith. He states, “Our eternal happiness will be in proportion to the way that we devote ourselves to helping others.” It isn’t only what we receive that makes us happy; it is what we give, and the more we give of that which is uplifting and supporting to others, the more we have to give. It grows like a great fountain of life and bubbles up to eternal happiness!

The Sister Spotlight

This sister was born in Craig, Colorado. She is the oldest child in her family, having one younger brother. Her family moved quite a bit and she lived in several places including Burley, Idaho; Fairbanks, Alaska; Portland, Oregon; Denver, Colorado, and finally Idaho Falls, Idaho where she graduated from high school. She attended BYU for a time. Then moved to Alaska again, where she met her husband. They have now been married 26 years! They were blessed with five children. Moving was still a part of her life as an adult, as they also lived in Utah, Louisiana, and Montana. They have been in Stevensville since 1994. In recent years, they moved from the 1st ward to our ward. She is an excellent pianist and currently serves as the primary pianist. She also enjoys scrap booking (and taking pictures of her family for that). She’s an avid reader and very good at writing. Raising her children has always been a top priority and she currently home schools them. Her husband works in Alaska at right now. She has a daughter serving a mission in Tennessee. Her parents are also in our ward.

Relief Society Presidency Message ~ April 2012

The literal meaning of the word sacrifice is “to make sacred.” However, over time the meaning of the word has changed. Today the word sacrifice means to give something up. Often in the church we talk about giving up our time and money for the building of the kingdom. If we went back to the original meaning of the word, we’d realize that every minute and every penny we donate to the church helps to sanctify us. We’re not really giving up anything at all, but instead, becoming more like our Savior. What a great way to look at the sacrifice of Christ during this Easter time!

The Sister Spotlight ~ April, 2012

This sister grew up the 4th of 5 children in Richland, Washington. She lived there all of her growing up years, and then studied history at BYU-Idaho. She enjoyed playing her violin in the orchestra there. She was able to further her education in Oxford-Brooks, England where she earned her Master’s degree in Children’s Literature. She soon met her husband, who at the time was a friend of her sister’s. They had a long distance relationship before being married. They have now been married almost four years and have a cute little boy named Isaac. He is almost two. They lived in Provo, Utah after their marriage, then moved to Missoula, Montana and now Stevensville. She is an avid reader with Jane Austin being one of her favorite authors. Her hobbies also include baking, cooking and crafts. Her husband says she is great at anything “homemade”. She even makes yogurt and soap. She also is starting a garden. As a life long member of the church she has been a teacher in Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society and currently primary. She is also our new music chairwoman. She has a wonderful singing voice and enjoys participating in ward choirs. Her husband says a few of her good qualities are being friendly, very kind and patient with others, and practical. Bountiful Baskets

March 2012 Relief Society Presidency Message

I have been reading "Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of the Relief Society". This month, the Relief Society organization is 170 years old! I have been so impressed with the efforts and extraordinary accomplishments of the early Relief Society sisters and the contributions worldwide to those in need! I share with you this quote from Emmeline B. Wells, Fifth RS President, written May 1914. "It is my strongest desire that our young women of today be made to comprehend the work of the early members who, without the facilities of the present time, comforted the sad and distressed, visited the widow and fatherless, and were like ministering angels." That was 98 years ago! What better facilities and technology we have now! What greater contributions we can and do make now! I feel so blessed to be part of this great and divine sisterhood!

The Sister Spotlight March 2012

This sister was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. She graduated from Sentinel High School. She was a middle child with 4 sisters and 2 brothers. As a teenager she had an LDS friend who invited her to mutual and introduced her to the church. Utah Technical College in Orem, Utah was where she majored in Fashion Merchandising. While back home for the summer, she met her “would be husband” on a blind date. They were married after she did another year of schooling. She worked with a friend in Orem who she would talk to about the church, and had some roommates who were also good influences on her. Although raised a Catholic, she was converted and baptized into the LDS church. She and her husband settled in Stevensville and had 5 children together (2 girls and 3 boys.) Her husband passed away after a car accident in ‘83. She has worked in the Stevensville schools since, now as a paraprofessional working with special needs children. She loves to sew, work on crafts, make jewelry, garden, and play with her 9 grandchildren in her spare time. She has some Salish Native American in her heritage. She has served in callings in all the auxiliaries of the church, currently in the nursery. She’s such a great part of our ward! Who is she? Click on the comments below to find out.

Message from the Relief Society Presidency January 2012

When Lehi asked Nephi and his brothers to return to Jerusalem to get the brass plates, Laman and Lemuel murmured, and quite frankly I can’t blame them - it was a one month, 500 mile roundtrip! The remarkable thing is that Nephi didn’t murmur. The reason is given in 1Ne. 2:16, “…I did cry unto the Lord; and behold he did visit me, and did soften my heart that I did believe all the words which had been spoken by my father…” Nephi’s reward for obeying without complaint is found in 1Ne. 3:6, “…thou shall be favored of the Lord, because thou hast not murmured.” When we feel overwhelmed with responsibilities, we too can go to the Lord in prayer and have our hearts softened, so we may obey willingly and without complaint.

The Sister Spotlight January 2012

This sister was born in Fresno, California where she was raised until her Junior year in high school when her family moved to Stevensville, Montana. She has been a life long member of the church. She is the youngest of three children with an older brother and sister. She met her husband at Stevensville high school while on a double date with other people. Next month they will have been married for 30 years. They have six kids, three girls and three boys which they raised here in Stevensville. They now have four granddaughters and one on the way. She currently works at the U of M planning and construction department and is taking a class there at the university as well. She has served in many callings in all the auxiliaries of the church and is now serving in the Relief Society presidency. She also sings in the choir. Her husband says she’s always been interested in photography and is good at taking pictures. They love to go to the Griz football games together. She loves to read. She is good at being a very loving, non judgmental friend and is a wonderful wife and mother. (Click on the comments to find out who she is.)

Bountiful Baskets!

Greetings from your local Bountiful Basket Volunteer Site Coordinators- Sarah Teeples & Moriah Cochran

We are happy to announce that Bountiful Baskets will begin in Stevensville on January 14!  We are sending you this email because you signed up on our interest list.  If you are no longer interested just email me back and I will remove you. 

If you would like to participate please visit www.bountifulbaskets.org  there you will sign up for an account and read all about new participant instructions.  This website is where you will place your order/contribute when you would like a basket.  The website opens for contributions on Mondays at noon and closes on Tuesdays at 10pm for pick up that Saturday. So, if you would like a basket on the 14th, you will need to go to the website and place your order/contribution by Tuesday the 10th at 10pm (we recommend Monday just out of habit because we will begin to sell out of baskets early in the contribution period).  If you don't contribute in that time frame you will not recieve a basket.  Every time you would like a basket you must go on-line and contribute during the open time frame.

Contribution time closes on Tuesday night, but some sites fill up quickly. Each site has an allotted number of baskets that it can accommodate. In order for more baskets to be available in a particular area, volunteers must step up, be trained, and find a location where they can open a new site.

The contribution is $15.00 per basket. The organic upgrade is $10.00 for a total of $25.00. The amount for add-ons varies depending on the item. The first time basket fee is $3.00. The processing fee is $1.50, which must be paid every time you contribute. Your entire contribution is spent on food, so the $1.50 is necessary to cover card processing, servers, and other expenses.

When you check out, you agree to be on time to pick-up your produce. Unless otherwise noted pick-ups are on Saturday morning. It is helpful to double-check the time on the website under “Locations” each Friday night to be sure there hasn’t been a last-minute change. You have a 20-minute window to pick up your produce. If you are late, or do not show up, your produce will be donated and will be unavailable to you.

You also agree to volunteer on occasion. This is a volunteer organization. We all chip in, no one gets paid, so all of our money goes to buying great food at great prices! If you are able bodied, we ask that you volunteer at least once every 6 to 8 times you participate. If you can not, then don’t worry about it.

There are no refunds or exchanges, but if you don’t like it, there is no commitment to participate again. You have to contribute every week that you want a basket—they don’t just carry your contribution over. If you contribute for add-ons, you will have a chance to inspect those at the pick-up to make sure they are of good quality before you take them home. If they are spoiled or damaged, or if they do not arrive on the truck (these things occasionally happen), then the volunteer site coordinator will submit a credit request for you to be reviewed by Sally and Tanya, the co-op founders.

As of today our pickup time is 3:30 at the North Valley Public Library Community Room.  But please double check before you come to pickup on Saturdays, as time and location may change.  We are trying to find and secure a larger location because we are worried we may run out of room!  If you have any ideas of pickup locations please let us know! We just need an indoor location during the winter months.

When you sign up for an account on the Bountiful Baskets website you can  enter two phone numbers.  We will call these numbers if you forget to come and pick up your basket so make sure it is a number we can get ahold of you at, like a home and cell phone number.

If you can volunteer please come at 2:00.  Volunteers are needed to help unload the truck and carry in produce, sort the produce, and help people when they come to pick-up their basket.

For now, the best thing you can do to familiarize yourself with Bountiful Baskets is go to bountifulbaskets.org and click on the "New Participant Instructions" in the top bar. This will walk you through everything you need to know! 

Lastly we ask for your patience!  We have been trained but we are new to this so please be understanding! And like everyone at Bountiful Baskets we are volunteers! This is not a paid position and we both have busy lives, but love to get a great deal!! We look forward to working with you!

Shelby Jennings is 11 years old and suffers from mental disabilities. Shelby had the intelligence of a 8 to 10 year old, but the emotional maturity of a 4 to 5 year with their impulsive and curious tendencies. Every day is filled with pain and confusion. Please help us get a therapy dog for Shelby. A Therapy dog will be able to help Shelby in many ways. The dog will be trained to nudge or distract Shelby away from negative activates such as hording food out of the fridge or cupboards, playing with knife’s or scissors. If unable to nudge or distract her, the dog can warn the adult in the home, school, etc. of the danger. The dog will also be able to sense when Shelby is mentally or emotionally overwhelmed or losing control and again distract her and comfort her and warn those around her. Also the dog will be trained to track and locate Shelby if she wanders off or sneaks away form those watching her. Shelby has been suffering from these disabilities for over seven year. They control and affect her every hour of every day. A therapy dog will enable Shelby to be a kid again to gain independence and focus, and to ease her fears from her emotional and mental disorders. Please help us take the Dis- out of Disability with an Ability dog for Shelby.

The Sister Spotlight December 2011

Born in Shelby, North Carolina, this lady has four sisters and one brother.  Her father was in the military, so the family moved frequently.  They lived in South Carolina for a time, California, Nevada, Murray, Utah and then graduating high school in St. George, Utah.  She is a talented cook and has worked managing several fast food restaurants.  She is especially good at baking and her pies are wonderful.  She loves children and does a great job serving as our CTR 4 primary teacher currently.  She has a twelve year old daughter.  She is also a very good care giver for her grandfather who lives with her.  A talent that she has developed more recently is singing..  She has a beautiful voice.  She enjoys writing and completed at least one book and is currently working on a series for teenagers.  She is known for being a hard working, very compassionate, smart woman.  Being outgoing and friendly, she is always fun to talk to.  We are so lucky to have her in our ward!  Who is she?  Click on the comments below to find out.

Message from the R.S. Presidency December 2011

   We know what the Christmas season ought to be--we know it should be a time of reflection on the birth of the Savior, a time of celebration and generosity.  But, surrounded with the commercialization and even greed of the season, we can find ourselves much like the memorable Dr. Seuss character, Grinch, as he stated, "For fifty-three years I've put up with it!  Now... I MUST stop this Christmas from coming...but how?"  Only when the Grinch sees Christmas through new eyes, does he understand the true meaning of the season.
   If we look fro what is wrong with the Christmas season, we can surely find it.  But if we look for the good, we can see this time of year with new eyes--perhaps even with the eyes of a child.  Then our eyes will be open to the miracles all around us--at Christmas time and throughout the year.
   Sisters, let us enjoy the peace and joy of the season!  Let us feel gratitude for the Savior's life, teachings, and sacrifice for us.  Let this gratitude draw us closer to our family and fellowmen.  Let it renew our determination to follow the Savior's teachings.  My sincerest wishes to you for a wonderful and merry Christmas season!  (Taken from Pres. Stevensville 2nd Ward Trunk-or-Treat!

We will then have a costume parade inside before dismissing the kids to Trunk-or-Treat. 

 There will be chili & cider in the kitchen and this activity is combined with 1st Ward.

Book Club meetings are  – November 17, December 8. The meetings are at 7 P.M. at the Niemann home at 132 1st Avenue.

November will be learning about Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg. The study material is available from Ila Niemann at her home or from Sherry Richardson at Church in the Library or Relief Society. Have you read their poems?

December 8 meeting book will be Memorable Stories and Parables by Boyd K. Packer. This is a wonderful book you will want to have in your library. Choose one story to share at the meeting and how it has affected your life. See you there.

Message from the R.S. Presidency October 2011

During this month’s General Conference, I was fascinated by the talk given by Robert D. Hales as he spoke about waiting upon the Lord. I thought that meant waiting for things to happen according to God’s time frame, which in a way it does. But according to Elder Hales, it also means hoping and trusting that His will be done, pondering, being patient, receiving the Holy Ghost, and relying on the merits of Christ. Waiting on the Lord doesn’t mean that we do nothing, but that we press forward and live according to our beliefs. Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

The Sister Spotlight October 2011

This sister was born in Hamilton and raised mostly in Missoula.  She has one sister (who is also in our ward) and one brother.  She now has six children and 14 grandchildren of her own– which are her priority in life as well as her joy.  She has her Master’s Degree in education, teaching high school English and Literature and Alternative school over the years.  She loves traveling and going on new adventures.  In fact, when her grand kids turn 12 years old, she likes to take them with her on a trip somewhere.  She has seen 32 out of the 100 wonders of the world, which have taken her to places like Africa, Greece, Paris, Australia, Egypt, Vienna and recently the Galapagos Islands.  For her 60th birthday, she went sky diving!  She enjoyed that and has also been parasailing and bungee jumping.  She lives life to the fullest and being busy.  Her interests include photography– especially of children and sunsets.  She loves music and dancing.  Her talents include playing the piano and organ.  As a teenager she even played the organ at the fairgrounds.  She enjoys all kinds of water activities including scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing.   She has served in all the organizations of the church.  Her favorite jobs  are working with the youth and in the temple.  Her sister says she just makes the world a better place with her smile, sense of humor and her fun presence.  Who is she?  Click on the comments to find out.

Message from the R.S. Presidency September 2011

I read Sister Julie Beck's article, "Relief Society History: A Look at the Lord's Vision for His Daughters" in the current September Ensign.  Her own study of our history revealed "...an impressive record of the Lord's dealings with His daughters and His expectations for them."  In her article, we  gain valuable perspectives from an understanding of our history:
   We see how the Lord has helped sisters of the past and we gain testimony that He will also help us today;
   We gain the perspective we need to keep our focus on the essential things that will bless our lives eternally:
   We understand our inseparable connection to the priesthood.  The Prophet Joseph Smith said, "I will organize the women under the priesthood after the pattern of the priesthood";
   We understand that as we enter Relief Society we become part of a great worldwide sisterhood,  united in discipleship.
Finally, we learn through our history "who we are and our vital role in our Heavenly Father's plan.  We can't delegate our responsibilities to someone else.  Because our Heavenly Father knows us and loves us, He will sustain us as we seek to align our will with His."

Sister Spotlight September 2011

Born near Kalamazoo, Michigan, this sister lived there until she was only three years old.  Then her family moved to Missoula, Montana.  She had 2 sisters (one passed away as a baby) and 2 brothers.  She met her husband who lived in the neighborhood where she grew up.  They fell in love and married soon after.  They were blessed with three children, one boy and two girls.  At 24 years old she was introduced  to the church when some ward missionaries stopped  to talk with the family.  (Her husband was a member, but inactive.)  She and her 2 older children were soon baptized.  She's felt the gospel bless her life, especially with raising her children.  She's since held many callings in the church such as R.S. teacher, YW president, nursery worker, single adult representative and is currently one of our visiting teaching supervisors.  She and her husband moved to Lolo in 1977.  Her husband passed away in 1999.  She moved to Florence in 2004, were she now lives with her son, three Pekinese dogs and a cat.  She's always loved animals.  She is a talented artist and has done many paintings over the years.  She likes doing family history work.  Traveling with  her granddaughter is anther thing she enjoys.  She is known for her positive attitude- she has had several major surgeries in the past few years and is not a complainer.  She is a lot of fun to be around.  We sure love her!  Who is she?  Click on the comments to find out.

Book Club this Thursday (Sorry, this is from a couple of Thursdays ago. Ari :) was uplifting as we listened to comments on books that had been read.


Book Club for October will be on October 13 – second Thursday at Niemann’s, 132 1st Avenue, at 7:00. Parking is available in the driveway and across the road.

The book for this month is Daughters in My Kingdom – The History and Work of Relief Society, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Forward is a Message from the First Presidency encouraging the Sisters to study this book. And..don’t skip the Preface—it gives you a desire to read the complete book.

The books are a gift from the First Presidency and the Relief Society and were handed out at Relief Society last Sunday. If you do not have one, ask Sister Gibbs or come by my house where she left twelve of them.

I am on Chapter 6 now (with my red pencil in hand) and have learned many things and read about activities in which I participated—which was a surprise to me. The reading is inspiring, it gives knowledge about Relief Society that I didn’t know and some are thoughts I will never forget. One is: A sister who had been through World War 11 in East Germany was asked how she kept a testimony during all these trials. She said, “I didn’t keep a testimony through those times—my testimony kept me.”

Even if you can’t come share with us, read the book and enjoy the history and testimonies of Relief Society. Ila Marie Niemann

Bring Your Own Family Names to the Temple
If you are taking your own family's names to the temple to perform their ordinances, you do not need to submit them to the Stake.  However, please do contact Sister Lori Schallenberger or Sister Margaret Wirtz to make sure your names are "temple ready".

Printed "Ordinance Cards"
If you already have printed "ordinance cards" and have too many family names to perform ordinances by yourself and would like the help of members of our Stake, please take them to the Hamilton or Stevensville FHC's.
If you do not have your own family names, many members of our Stake would greatly appreciate help with temple work for their families!

All the printed "ordinance cards" will be sorted -- by specific ordinance and alphabetically.  This will be done by Lori Schallenberger and Margaret Wirtz and be taken to Bro. Greg Olsen on Thursday, September 15.

At the Temple
When members get to the Temple for the Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17 sessions, please come to the lobby of the Spokane Stake Center--just across the driveway--to pick up "ordinance cards" .

If you are doing more than one session of the same ordinance, pick up the number of cards you will need to do them.

Child Care
Child care will be available at the Stake Center on September 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00p.m., for ages 18 months and older.

Stake Conference

Just a reminder that Stake Conference is this weekend August 20th-21st.  We have Bishop Keith B. McMullin here.  He is the Second Counselor of the Presiding Bishopric.  The Stake presidency has asked us to come and bring our journals.  The adult session is TONIGHT! 7pm

Message from the Presidency August 2011

Can we make a difference to others when we follow the Savior? Does the service we perform in His name make the world a better place? Elder L. Tom Perry shares an experience he had while stationed in Nagasaki, Japan, after the end of WWII. Wanting to make a difference during time off, he and other soldiers repaired Christian churches and helped the ministers begin preaching again. When Elder Perry and his companions left Japan for home, the Japanese Christians they had served came to bid them farewell in a touching display of love and gratitude. Elder Perry testifies of the Savior and His love and Atonement for each of us, declaring that “the only lasting joy and happiness we will ever find during our mortal experience will come by following the Savior, obeying His law, and keeping His commandments.”

The Sister Spotlight August 2011

This sister was born in Rigby, Idaho but raised in Aiken, South Carolina. She was raised in a blended family of 7 sisters. She met her husband-to-be at a young single adult activity in Georgia. She moved to Provo, Utah where she dated the young man from Georgia again. They soon fell in love and were married. Their first home was in Draper, Utah where they lived for a year. Then service in the army took her husband to Fort Bragg, No. Carolina where they eventually lived for four years, and then Georgia again. There they both finished schooling. She graduated in Occupational Therapy. Recently, they moved here to Montana where she finished with clinicals. She is now in the process of job hunting. This family has been blessed with 4 children- 3 boys and one girl ages 8 years to 7 months. Her hobbies include sewing, camping, and photography. As a new member in our ward she was recently called as second counselor in the Primary presidency. Her husband says this calling is great for her because she loves children.
